The Observer is an exploration of the consciousness and the layers of our psyche that make up our identity. Once the layers of flesh and bone are shed, there is only our inner bodies left. Within that inner body lies two main entities, the ego and the shadow. The ego controls most of our personality; it is the driving force behind how we act and interact with the world around us. In contrast, there is the shadow. The shadow of our unconscious mind, a concept originally developed by Carl Jung, represents the darkest part of ourselves; it is a label for the most inner and deep unconscious emotions that we wish to hide. Jung’s idea is that in accepting our shadow, we can become whole and live a fulfilled life.
Through the use of clay and paint, I explore my own shadow and what it means to materialize my insecurities, weaknesses, and anxiety into a physical form. To explore my shadow is to recognize and conceptualize the fabricated subconscious of the body and soul. Through the sculptures, I create in physical form my fragmented body. The hard yet fragile flesh ripped open and hollow, the inside left bare for viewing. The soul escapes the form and becomes embodied within the paintings, rendering both the conscious and unconscious parts of my mind. My persona is objectified, waiting to be observed.
